Inbound Search Handler is a simple plugin which allows you to define inbound search keywords which automatically set the active city to whatever you want! Want anyone who searched for ‘LA’ to see Los Angeles? Done!

NOTE: If a seach contains keywords pointing to multiple cities, only the first match is relevant.

The search is fixed on the site for the most part, it is very inconsistent with results. If I type in atlanta (los angeles is default) it redirects to atlanta but when first typing in atlanta it shows zero listings then if I click search again it shows 5+ listings. This is weird and seems to defeat the purpose of the plugin. It does switch cities which is great when you type in atlanta or whatever other predefined keyword but that initial search is not working. So the user needs to click search twice and that can pose a big problem for user-friendliness and cause people to leave the site.

My question now is about the whole google issue. If I type in “atlanta sights” in google and my default city is Los Angeles, it will not redirect me to the right page from google to the sight. It stays on Los Angeles and fails to switch to Atlanta. However, on the site itself I love how the plugin is interacting with the search bar. Hopefully we can now fix the google issue because I think SEO is greatly impacted by google not being able to direct to the correct page. Multicity search seems like it would fix all the issues and make the site more like yelp or other competitors.

Are you using the secured or unsecured version of Google? If you’re at https://www.google.com, it doesn’t pass the referer information on to the site, so can’t read it. Using the standard site (or ask.com, yahoo.com, or similar search engine) it works fine though.

I’m interested in this plugin, but why are there not more sales? It seems like a great idea.

If I had to take a guess? It hasn’t been around long and I’ve given it almost no advertising. I’ve been too busy with my next release to really push my newer plugins.

Sad part is I haven’t had ANY downloads of the one free plugin I have… people should want to advertise TT! That’s the easiest way to make our community grow!

    Thinking about purchasing this plugin.

Is there a fix yet so the visitor does not have to click search twice as mentioned above?

Or is there a way around this?

The aforementioned issue was handled via email, and I neglected to post the resolution here. Here’s a paraphrasing of the original email:

“The plugin [is] acting as expected. If you notice the breadcrumbs, the initial search from Google is sending you to a location called ‘[your city] sights’, which obviously doesn’t exist. When you search for it manually, you’re actually searching for [your city] sights’. These are two different pages. The search component itself doesn’t force you to a particular page or search result. Thus, searching for ‘[your business] [your city] [your site]‘ would load the [your business] location details page instead of the search page with that search string. I chose to code it this way for (what I believe is) a good reason. Instead of forcing a customer to leave the page they may be looking for and showing them a search results page, they are sent to the page they ACTUALLY clicked on, and the location variable is updated to show the correct information when they then leave that page. Prior to the search handler, linking to [your business] and then hitting home would still link to the default city, as the location variable wasn’t actually updated. My plugin changes that.”

As a result of this discussion, an upcoming update to the handler will allow more fine-grained control of search terms, such that terms can be defined as direct links or general searches at the admins discretion. Any term defined as a direct link will link to a specific page, and anything defined as a general search will override the link you clicked on and search for the terms instead.

    When is the update coming?

Without a doubt, this is a MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best plugin for GeoThemes in my opinion.

Makes the site more user friendly and return results that visitors actually want.

Now you don’t have to make your visitor select their area. DO PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS?

Since some people don’t want to give their “location” in the browser but they will still type in their location when searching….human nature.

    Best $3 spent EVER.

Any person using GeoThemes with more than 1 city needs this plugin. If you don’t, you would be losing visitors. PERIOD.

Ghost – can you help me? I can’t make this work and have added all the key places and redirections in the settings.

I’ve used the NON secure google – didn’t change the location.
I used the search within the site – didn’t change the location.

    :(

Do you have an email I can send you the link to?

  7. Buyer
    milijun says:

Ghost, to second what this overload is saying, I sent you a couple emails that have gone unanswered regarding that promised update coming to this plugin. Can we please have an update to fix those issues of the search not changing the city. The last comment I see is from 3 months ago where an update is being talked about.

With the release of GT3.2.x, I have had to update all of my plugins a good deal. Some have already been updated to comply with the changes in the latest release, ISH and the featured content widget are currently being worked on. In addition to updating for this latest release, they are all being migrated to a more standards-compliant codebase and now fully support translation. All should receive an update within the next 72 hours to include these changes, as well as new features in several. If you have not received this update by Monday, please send me an email at [email protected] and I will make sure you get it.

Also, please note that a bug has been found in the update script I have been using. It does not always properly report when an update is available.

    Ghost1227 says:

Further testing has shown that while an update is needed (to comply with coding standards and add a new feature), this should be working with GT3.2.x… can you provide more information as to the problem you are having?

    Hi Ghost,

How do you update the plugin WITHOUT losing the prior settings?

If I delete the plugin and then reinstall the new plugin, will the keywords I put in before still be there or do I have to redo it all over again?

If I have to redo it all over again, is there a way to import/export the list?

P.S. – Again, without a doubt this is the best and must have plugin for Geotheme!!!!

    • Verified Tailor
      Ghost1227 says:

Rather than deleting and reinstalling the plugin, simply overwrite it (uploading the new plugin to your wp-content/plugins folder via FTP). In this way, you won’t lose anything. However, I don’t believe that I put a cleanup script into the search handler, so it shouldn’t remove any settings regardless (could be wrong though, I’d have to double check).

One more thing Ghost, I have not upgraded to 3.2.1 yet. Still on 3.1.3. Do you think your new Inbound Search Handler is better than the previous?

    • Verified Tailor
      Ghost1227 says:

Inbound Search Handler is currently on version 1.3 (although 2.0 should be released within a day or two). Are you referring to the GT platform itself? If so, the latest version is a significant improvement on past releases.

What is the best way to see if the plugin is updated? I am still unclear where it is best to see this, under WordPress plugins or here in my recent orders on ThemeTailors?

    thomashere says:

    Hi Ghost,

    Got an important question.

Let’s say I search for Widgets A Los Angeles.

My location will automatically be locked in Los Angeles.

I can NOT search out of Los Angeles unless I type in a different city.

How do we make it so that the every search is a NEW search plus location.

Meaning, if I don’t type in Los Angeles for my second search, it would just return results
    from the entire database.

    Maybe the above is confusing.

    Let’s make it simpiler.

1.If search has keyword than go to that location
2.If search does NOT have keyword then search from “?multi_city=0″

    Does that make sense?

    • Buyer
      teckvo says:

      1. is ok
      2. I am not agree to number 2, because I use auto redirect to city. If user doesn’t enter location to search then search should only be to user selected city not all city. If user select ALL cities, then search returns listing from ALL Cities.

Thomashere, I agree with your comment, and thought this was coming in the update that ghost had referred to. I think your simplified explanation was actually right on point and summed it up nicely!
